The Big Give – together, we did it!

Jul 1, 2025

A special message from some of the beneficiaries of our Tackling Loneliness project.

This was filmed last week on a canal boat trip, where local visually impaired people had a chance to spend time in nature and with each other, addressing some the loneliness that can so often go hand in hand with sight loss, especially in older people.

We did it!

Thanks to the wonderful generosity of the people of Derbyshire, our Small Charity Week Tackling Loneliness match funding appeal was a big success!

Through the inaugural Small Charity Week match funding scheme, organised by the Big Give, the NCVO and Global’s Make Some Noise, we were allocated up to £1,000 in match funds, kindly donated by organisations such as the People’s Postcode Lottery, the Gregg’s Foundation and the Reed Foundation, amongst others. All we had to do was ask the people of Derbyshire to donate to our Tackling Loneliness appeal and raise £1,000 in order to have it doubled to £2,000!

We are so grateful that so many people decided to take up the opportunity of seeing their donation doubled and generously gave to our campaign. In just one week £1,287 was donated which when doubled and with Gift Aid added, made a grand total of £2,590!

This will make a big difference to the older visually impaired people who benefit from our Tackling Loneliness campaign through attending social activities or having a befriending volunteer.

“I can’t put into words what a difference having a befriender has made to me. She has given me a little happiness back.”

From everyone here at Sight Support Derbyshire – beneficiaries, volunteers, staff and trustees – a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who donated so generously.
