Community Outreach Volunteer

Sight Support Derbyshire is seeking enthusiastic, community‑minded volunteers to help spread the word about our work across Derbyshire. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy being active, engaging with their local community, and would like to play a key part in raising awareness about Sight Support Derbyshire and our volunteer opportunities throughout local towns and villages across the county.

It’s a great opportunity for anyone who loves chatting to people, exploring local areas and supporting a charity that makes a real difference to people living with sight loss.

What you will do: 

  • Distribute flyers on community notice boards in your local community and / or towns, villages across Derbyshire e.g. community bulletin boards, libraries, coffee shops, shopping centres, supermarkets, community centres.
  • Ensure materials are delivered in designated areas within an agreed timeframe.
  • Follow local council regulations and guidelines regarding flyer distribution.
  • Keep a basic record of areas covered.
  • Help host a pop‑up Sight Support Derbyshire information desk at community locations or events, chatting to members of the public and answering basic questions (full guidance provided).
  • Represent the organisation in a positive and respectful manner within local communities.

Times Expected: This is a flexible role, and volunteers can choose to undertake it in line with their availability. There are opportunities available across Derbyshire.

Skills Required:  

  • Good communication skills.
  • Strong sense of responsibility.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Attention to detail.

Sight Support Derbyshire Induction Details: You will be given the option to attend an induction, which will provide you with an awareness and understanding of the main types of sight loss, the impact of visual impairments and how best you can support someone, including a sight guiding demonstration. We will also go through expectations as a volunteer and how you will be supported by us.

Specific Role Training Details: We will give you training specific to this role, and a member of staff will provide regular ongoing support to you.

Expenses:  We will reimburse your out of pocket expenses in line with our expenses policy.

Before you start: You will be required to provide us with the names of two people who can provide a character reference for you.

Our opening hours are Monday – Thursday 8.30am to 4.30pm.
