Music Vision Room Workshops

We’re excited to announce our new Music Vision Room project for people living with a visual impairment and their carers. Led by professional and experienced music teacher Mendi Singh these will launch during National Eye Health Week.

These friendly and creative workshops are easy to join — no musical experience is needed. It’s a relaxed and welcoming space where you can try new things, meet others, and enjoy making music together.

You will create music using everyday objects. You will be amazed at the sounds you can make with items such as mugs, pots, tins, and bowls, all played with chopsticks provided. Together, we will learn simple rhythms, explore music from around the world, and even record your own music to keep and share. You can watch a piece of music created at a similar workshop run by Mendi here.

The sessions are guided by an experienced music teacher, so there is no pressure, just encouragement, support, and lots of fun.

How it works

Step 1: Rhythm Practice
Use small items from home or the centre, like mugs, tins, and bowls. Chopsticks will be provided to tap and create rhythms.

Step 2: Play along
Join in with expert guidance to play along with professional artists using the rhythms you’ve learned.

Step 3: Record a Special Piece of Music
You will have the opportunity to record a special piece of music to keep and share.

Step 4: Final Showcase
If you like, you can join a final showcase at the end of the project to celebrate your music journey.

Venue: Grace chapel – 89 Market Place, Chesterfield S40 1PH

1st session start time 10.30 – arrival for 10.15.

Dates:

  • Wednesday 24th September
  • Wednesdays 8th and 22nd October
  • Wednesday 5th November
  • Wednesday 3rd December

To join these workshops, please contact Victoria Gallimore on 01332 292262 or email enquiries@sightsupportderbyshire.org.uk to book your place asap.

You can attend all the sessions or just one or two – come along and give it a try! The cost is just a £2 voluntary contribution on the day.

You can find out more about Mendi here: Mendi Singh or watch this beautiful recording of a collaboration with harpist Eleanor Turner

Mendi is sitting cross legged on the floor. His hair is tied back, he is smiling and is wearing a dark blue outfit. The background is blurred but looks like a grand stately home room with pillars and a candelabra. There are flower garlands decorating the floor behind Mendi
