Befriending

We know that sometimes living with sight loss can be isolating and can contribute to feelings of loneliness, especially in older people who may also be facing other challenges such as hearing loss, mobility issues or other health problems.

If you:

  • Live in Derby or Derbyshire
  • Are aged 50 or over
  • Live alone
  • Have a sight impairment which impacts on your daily life
  • Are feeling lonely or isolated
  • Have little or no social interaction
  • Have little or no family or carer support
  • Spend much of your time alone

then we may be able to help you through our Befriending project.

The project provides the opportunity for you to form a supportive, reliable, trusting relationship with a befriending volunteer. All our volunteers are DBS checked and receive training. We will match you with someone in your area who will make contact on a regular basis, either visiting you at home, arranging to meet you in a local café, for example, or telephoning you for a chat. They can also help with small tasks such as reading a letter for you or changing the batteries in a clock for example. With the support of our Befriending Coordinators you will decide what is best for you and your volunteer.

If you or someone you know may benefit from this project please contact us using the button below or phone 01332 292262 or email enquiries@sightsupportderbyshire.org.uk

If you would like to find out more about how to become a befriending volunteer, please visit our volunteering page.

We are very grateful to the funders of this project including The Masonic Charitable Foundation.
